Katherine Newman and Rondiamo Win $5,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix at HITS Culpeper

CULPEPER, VA (August 27, 2013) – Twenty-two year old Katherine Newman of Wellington, Florida piloted Jennifer Swift’s Rondiamo to top honors in the $5,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix on Saturday at HITS Culpeper. The class was the last of the qualifiers held in Culpeper for the Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final. HITS Saugerties hosts the final qualifier and Wild Card class this Saturday.

Newman posted the top scores in both the first and second rounds over a course designed by Rian Beals of Saugerties, New York. She rode to an impressive score of 90 in the first round and returned with a 92 for a total of 182. The only pair to post scores in the 90s, Newman and Rondiamo secured the blue by exactly ten points.   

Chiara Parlagreco of Warrenton, Virginia, who won the inaugural  HITS $250,000 Hunter Prix Final last year, has moved up to show in the Devoucoux Hunter Prix this year and finished in second place with and Ainsley Treptow’s The Impressionist. Their scores of 85.5 and 86.5 combined for a total of 172.

Devan Graham of Chevy Chase, Maryland riding her own Delorian rode to an 84 and an 83 to finish third with a 167. Coming off a hunter prix win last week, Ian Silitch of Ocala, Florida rode his own Marlon to fourth place with a final score of 165 after an 81 and 84. Dorothy Douglas of Flower Mound, Texas capped the top five with Richard Covert’s MTM Follow Me. They earned an 82.5 in the first round and an 81.5 in the second for a final score of 164.

Riders in the Devoucoux Hunter Prix with their sights set on qualifying for the Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final have had weekly opportunities to earn points at HITS Horse Shows across the county. The Diamond Mills Hunter Prix Final will welcome qualified riders from both coasts and highlight HITS Championship Weekend, September 4-8, in Saugerties.
