Brianne Goutal-Marteau and Heartland Bring Home Performance Hunter Championship at HITS-on-the-Hudson III

Saugerties, N.Y. — June 8, 2023 — Brianne Goutal-Marteau and Heartland captured the attention of the judges during the final week of the HITS Saugerties Spring Series as Goutal-Marteau returned to home soil in New York. They showcased their style in the Performance Hunter division, earning the championship title after winning two over fences classes during the first two days of competition.

“[Heartland] was great yesterday and today,” commented Goutal-Marteau. “I thought he was very smooth in the first round. He jumped in great style and I think he's happy to be here.”

Goutal-Marteau began riding the 8-year-old Oldenburg gelding owned by Sterling Equine LLC in February. This week they earned the top score in two of the over fences classes and also earned a second place ribbon in the Performance Hunter division. Michael Desiderio and Cocolores, who claimed the win in last Saturday’s $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby, won the handy round and went on to claim the division’s reserve championship.

Goutal-Marteau was thrilled with Heartland’s performance noting, “He is a fairly simple guy. This morning I rode him in the ring for maybe five minutes, and yesterday the same. He’s not your traditional, big prep horse. He’s very relaxed and I think he likes to do his job. Even though he's young and he hasn't shown much, he is always trying to do the right thing and give you the correct answers.”

Now, Goutal-Marteau and Heartland are looking forward to competing for three weeks in July during the HITS Summer Series.

I have been competing here for as long as this show has been here,” concluded the New York native. “I remember competing in Ellenville, so I remember when it moved here. Then Joe Norick got involved and took over the refurbishments of the place. We're really happy! The new ring is amazing, and I'm really excited to see the continued improvements.”

Hunter action for the Spring Series at HITS-on-the-Hudson season will conclude this week, but the HTS Saugerties Summer Series will get underway in July at the world-class facility. The HITS Saugerties Spring Series will feature a $10,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby week on Saturday. Classics in the Short Stirrup division, through Junior and Amateur-Owner Hunters highlight hunter competition every week, including the Bit o’ Straw Classic and Novice Children’s/Adult Classics, all qualifiers for the Marshall & Sterling Insurance League Finals.
