SAUGERTIES, NY (June 6, 2009)—Highlighting
the jumper action on Friday at HITS-on-the-Hudson was two-time Olympic
Gold Medal Winner McLain Ward posting the fastest-double clear round
aboard Sagamore Farm’s Phillipa.
Ward and the 11-year-old Dutch
mare were the best of 34 horse-and-rider pairs who challenged Brazilian
Course Designer Guilherme Jorge's first-round course and the seven
pairs that advanced to the jump-off.
The victory for Ward and
Phillipa is their third of the circuit, following their wins in the
$25,000 HITS Grand Prix and $50,000 EMO Grand Prix during
HITS-on-the-Hudson I.
"Well, one thing is certain,
she clearly likes this ring,” said Ward. “He (Guilherme)
designs really great courses with increasing difficulty as the week
progresses. I am sure we will see a pretty challenging course
here in Saugerties on Sunday during the $125,000 Purina Mills Grand
Prix."
Ward and the winning mount had
one of the two double-clear rounds. They were second to go in the
jump-off and set the Great American Time to Beat at 31.682. Kirk Webby
and Sitah posted the only other clear round in the jump-off and stopped
the clocks in 31.834, just shy of Ward’s pace, assuring the pair
of the second-place finish.
Show jumping at HITS
Saugerties will continue all weekend and feature the $125,000 Purina
Mills Grand Prix on Sunday. Also on Sunday, is the ever-popular Purina
Mills Kids Day.
