SAUGERTIES, NY (June 19, 2007) — The HITS Saugerties spring horse shows came to a close on Sunday, June 17, but not before two major championships were decided. Once again it was the ladies who rose to the top. Neoma Sackler, of Greenwich, Connecticut, was crowned the winner in the $22,500 Children's/Adult Jumper Championship aboard Livorno and Michelle Spadone, of Califon, New Jersey, took home the $40,000 Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Championship with her mount R Marble KZ.
Both competitions were based on the format used for the United States Equestrian Federation National Show Jumping Championships and the FEI World Cup Finals. HITS has taken this competition format to the world of Children's/Adult Jumper riders and Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper riders.
There are three phases to each of the Championship competitions. The first is a Speed Class, where the jumps are not as high as in subsequent phases. Faults are assigned to riders based on their standings at the completion of each phase. Each rider is invited back for phase two, which is a class with higher jumps and time is a factor only if a rider exceeds the time allotted to complete the course. The top 25 riders after phase one and two return for the Final Match. The Final Match has the greatest number of jumps in the course, as well as the highest. It consists of two rounds over a Grand Prix style course. The scores from all three phases determine the Championship winners. The riders with the least number of faults and the best times take the championship.
In the $2,500 Children's/Adult Opening Match, Kali Jerman outperformed the field to take the early lead aboard Canon. Murray Kessler and All That won the $5,000 Children's/Adult Intermediate Match and the winner's share of the prize money was won by Sackler and Livorno. HITS awarded $22,500 in total prize money over the three days of competition in the Children's/Adult Jumper Championship competition.
In the $5,000 Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Championship Opening Match, Lacey Morone Kramer and Ulysses Ve Krekebeke grabbed the winner's share of the purse, taking home $1,500. Danielle Torano and her mount Pandoer captured the blue-ribbon in the $10,000 Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Championship Intermediate Match. At the end of round one on Sunday, three horses were tied for first place. But after round two, only Spadone and R Marble KZ had gone double clear to take the championship. She won $7,500 in championship prize money. In all, $40,000 in prize money was awarded in the three-days of the Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Championship competition.
HITS Saugerties now takes a five-week hiatus before returning on July 25 for three more weeks of world-class show jumping. The "Are you a Champion?" equestrian series returns for an encore to close the third and final week of the summer series of shows on August 8-12. Participants will have an opportunity to strut their stuff in HITS' Grand Prix Amphitheater, the largest ring on the property, with the Catskill Mountains as their backdrop. The summer series concludes with one final week of show jumping beginning on September 5, followed by the Marshall & Sterling League Finals, September 13-16 when acclaimed singer/songwriter Suzanne Vega will be performing for the Year-End High Point Awards Celebration.
