McLain Ward may have
not won the $25,000 Wild Card Grand Prix at HITS
Commonwealth Park in Culpeper, Virginia. However,
the Olympian was the highest previously unqualified
finisher in the large field of 47 horses, and
thus earned a spot in Sunday's $100,000 USGPL
Invitation Grand Prix.
Ward and Alias
finished ninth but most importantly they will
compete on Sunday for the top prize of $30,000
as HITS concludes its 2006 season of U.S. Grand
Prix League competition.
Manual Torres and
Chambacunero won the $25,000 Wild Card
Grand Prix but were already qualified for Sunday's
featured class. Torres took home $7,500 in prize
money to go along with the blue-ribbon.
Pablo Barrios and
Sun God were second and the three-time
defending champion Aaron Vale finished third aboard
Centus.
The jump order on
Sunday will have horses entering the ring in the
reverse order of their final USGPL ranking so
Ward will start the class off.
Canadian Jill Henselwood
will complete the classs at the bottom of the
order thanks to her win in March's $150,000 Grand
Prix of the Desert at the HITS Desert Circuit.
Henselwood will be riding Stacie Ryan's Black
Ice in the class that is scheduled to begin
at about 2:00 PM at HITS Commonwealth Park.
