Out & About: Silver Springs State Park

Silver Springs State Park

Hi, I’m Leah Chenelle, a Horse Show Secretary and I am a member of the marketing team for HITS. I am in Ocala for the two Holiday shows, and during the off week, I was looking for fun places to go on a few days off and I found Silver Springs.  I’m going to check it out this week and I think you should too!

This spot has been a natural landmark since the 1870’s. It is known as the first tourist attraction in Florida and is one of the largest artesian springs in the world. The main attraction of the park is the glass bottom boat tours. Tourists get the opportunity to watch the aquatic life below and landscape around the glassy waters. Fish, turtles, birds and alligators sightings are all part of the experience while traveling down the river.

Silver Springs is often referred to as the gateway to Ocala’s National Forest. This forest is the second largest most southern National Forest east of the Mississippi. This landmark was also home to Indian settlers whose remnants still lay under the water in the springs. To experience the springs from a different facet there are kayak and canoe rentals available. On site there is a restaurant, sweet shop and gift shop to enjoy after a fun ride through the springs. Tours run every thirty to forty five minutes from 10-4:30. Extended hours are available on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 10:30, 1 and 3.

This is the first of several ‘Day Trip’ ideas we will presenting throughout the circuit. Have you had a great day trip while in Ocala?  Share it with us and we’ll share it with everyone! Email leah@hitsshows.com or tag us in your day trip photos on social @HITSHorseShows or #HITSShows.
