HITS Saugerties 'Adopt-a-Highway' Spring Clean-Up

In 2017, HITS joined the Ulster County Department of Transportation (DOT) ‘Adopt-A-Highway’ Program as a way to ‘Give-Back’ to the Saugerties community. HITS adopted a 1+ mile stretch of roadway from Diaz Ambulance to Mike Kraut Road, which leads to the main entrance of the HITS-on-the-Hudson Show Grounds.

Twice a year, once in the spring and then again in the fall, HITS conducts a clean-up of this stretch of the highway. The bi-annual clean-ups are organized by HITS Adopt a Highway Coordinator, Francesca Mazella, who works in conjunction with the Ulster County DOT Adopt a Highway Program Director, Todd Gilbert. Volunteers from the HITS ‘Family’ meet and then collect trash and debris from the side of 9W. Once the roadsides are clear, the Ulster County DOT drives by to pick up and dispose of the garbage collected.

It was a beautiful morning for the 2020 Spring Clean-Up and the team of volunteers collected 10 bags of trash, which is one fewer than what was collected last fall. Special thanks to Kristen Vale, Katelyn Lamb, Martine Lopez, Francesca Mazella and her husband Todd for taking part in the spring clean-up!
